Paver Patio Design Guide for Gallatin Homeowners

Everything you need to know before investing in a paver patio in Middle Tennessee.

A paver patio is one of the best investments you can make in your outdoor living space. It adds usable square footage to your home, increases property value, and creates a space for everything from family dinners to quiet mornings with coffee. If you're a homeowner in Gallatin, Hendersonville, or anywhere in Sumner County, here's what you need to know before starting your paver patio project.

Choosing the Right Paver Material

Not all pavers are created equal. The material you choose affects the look, durability, maintenance requirements, and cost of your patio. Here are the most common options for Middle Tennessee homes:

  • Concrete pavers — The most popular choice. Available in dozens of colors, shapes, and textures. Durable, affordable, and easy to replace individual pavers if damaged. Most residential patios in the Gallatin area use concrete pavers.
  • Natural stone — Flagstone, bluestone, and travertine offer a premium, organic look. More expensive than concrete but each piece is unique. Works well for patios that need to complement natural surroundings.
  • Brick pavers — Classic and timeless. Brick offers warm tones and a traditional aesthetic. Slightly more limited in shape options but extremely durable.
  • Porcelain pavers — A newer option that's gaining popularity. Low porosity means they resist staining, fading, and moisture absorption. Ideal for pool decks and dining areas.

Design Patterns That Work

The laying pattern affects both the visual appeal and structural integrity of your patio. Herringbone patterns offer the best interlock for areas with vehicle traffic or heavy loads. Running bond (brick-like) patterns are clean and classic. Basketweave and circular patterns add visual interest for larger patios.

For most Gallatin homes, we recommend starting with a simple herringbone or running bond pattern and adding visual interest through border treatments and color contrast rather than complex central patterns. The result is cleaner and ages better.

Drainage Is Everything in Tennessee

Middle Tennessee gets an average of 47 inches of rain per year. That water has to go somewhere, and if your patio doesn't account for it, you'll have problems. Proper drainage planning includes:

  • Slope — Your patio should slope away from your home at a minimum of 1/8 inch per foot. This is subtle enough that you won't notice it visually but significant enough to move water effectively.
  • Base preparation — A proper compacted gravel base (typically 6-8 inches) provides both structural support and drainage. Skipping or skimping on base preparation is the number one cause of patio failure.
  • Edge restraints — Without proper edge restraints, pavers shift over time. We use commercial-grade edging secured with spikes to keep your patio's borders locked in place.

What to Expect on Cost

Paver patio costs in the Gallatin area vary based on size, material choice, site conditions, and complexity. As a general guide:

  • Small patio (100-200 sq ft) — $3,000 to $6,000. Ideal for a bistro-style dining area or small seating space.
  • Medium patio (200-400 sq ft) — $6,000 to $12,000. Room for a dining set, seating area, and possibly a fire pit.
  • Large patio (400+ sq ft) — $12,000+. Full outdoor living space with multiple zones, seating walls, and integrated features.

These ranges assume concrete pavers on a standard site. Natural stone, significant grading work, or retaining walls will increase costs. We provide free, detailed estimates that break down every line item so there are no surprises.

Why Hire a Professional

A paver patio looks simple, but the quality is entirely in the preparation. Proper excavation depth, base compaction, slope calculation, and edge restraint installation determine whether your patio lasts 5 years or 25. The pavers themselves are the easy part — the ground underneath is where the expertise matters.
